Lews Castle

Isle of Lewis in Scottish Isles

Largest island of the Outer Hebrides, the Isle of Lewis teems with history, heritage, wilderness, wildlife, arts, crafts, crofting culture and even adrenaline-fuelled adventure. Bustling Stornoway has streets lined with Victorian homes as well as artisan shops, amazing eateries and historic Lews Castle which was completed in 1854 and today houses a museum. Ness is the stronghold of the local language while in Uig you can taste the true spirit of the islands at the Uig Abhainn Dearg Distillery, where workers follow time honoured traditions to produce this well-loved “water of life”. Head to Ardroil sands to kitesurf or windsurf, at Uig Stornoway explore the sea caves and stacks at Garry Beach, admire the stretching white sands of Bosta on beautiful Great Bernera or take a boat trip out to the Flannan Islands, which are home to some wonderful wildlife including puffins and kittiwake as well as whales and dolphins offshore. Another must-see are the Callanish Standing Stones, imposing monolithic monuments standing proud above the windswept wilds of the West Side and an eternal testament to islanders enduring spirit and ingenuity.
